Responsible purchasing of forest products means sourcing products that contain wood or fibre from responsibly managed forests, or from post-consumer recycled materials, and not from unknown, illegal or controversial sources.
Buyers play a key role in driving responsible production of forest products by ensuring that the wood or fibre they use comes from forests that are responsibly managed. A sound sourcing policy ensures that the company will give priority to recycled wood and fibres, and responsibly produced wood, as certified by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC). Furthermore, to ensure that the manufacturing of the forest products does not lead to water or air pollution – in particular in the case of paper manufacturing – buyers should verify that the producing company has limited its global environmental footprint.
Better inter-sectoral coordination.
We are working with WRI on the sustainable procurement guide for wood and paper board products, giving companies the right tools to make responsible choices and build informed sourcing policies.
Encourage all friends and family to find and buy FSC certified. Nearly all did not know about it untill I began working for FSC.
If I know the wood I am buying is illegal I don't buy it. I look for the source of almost every product I buy at the grocery store and make sure I am making a sustainable choice
